1957 Appaloosa News
While looking through some old Appaloosa News recently, I came across this article that really caught my attention. So much of what was printed in 1957 still applies to today's world.

LET'S USE THE CORRECT TERMINOLOGY
by George Hatley
Have you ever heard a Hereford breeder say "This Hereford is an Angus type Hereford"?, or, "This one is a Shorthorn type Hereford"? They often use the term "show type" or "range type" indicating the animal's use, but never use the name of a competing breed. A dairyman would not say "This is a Jersey type Holstein". It sounds a little ridiculous when you think of it.

Another Appaloosa stallion was a bit leggier, carried his head a bit higher and been trained as a parade horse and for showing under English equipment. After the visitor said, "This is an American Saddlebred type Appaloosa," Jerry tore his hair out and said, " No this horse is not American Saddlebred. If you are unable to think in terms of Appaloosas and have to classify him as something else, call him English (ridden under English equipment) type Appaloosa or Parade type Appaloosa."

Appaloosas are "all around", many-use, versatile breed. With many uses there is some variation in height and weight, but let's think in terms of "Appaloosa type" - or use - not in terms of other breeds. |
